The banked corners at Zandvoort were giving drivers problems at the Dutch GP during FP2. Notably, the two Aussie drivers Oscar Piastri and Daniel Ricciardo, who ran into the wall at turn 3. Piastri sustained no injuries, Ricciardo incurred a broken hand.
According to Formula1.com, “…Ricciardo broke a metacarpal on his left hand…”. He was taken to a local hospital and as a result will not be able to race this weekend in Zandvoort. This would have been his third race of the season, not counting the most recent Sprint race in Belgium.
After most recently replacing Nyck Devries at AlphaTauri, Ricciardo had not been in the newly required F1 seat for very long. Liam Lawson, the 21-year-old New Zealander, is a reserve driver for Red Bull and AlphaTauri.
Lawson is currently racing in the Japan-based Super Formula championship, where he is sitting in second place in the standings. Lawson has been making steady improvements in hopes of getting the call to race in F1. In 2021, he finished 9th place in Formula 2. In 2022, Lawson finished 3rd place overall with 149 points. This year, Lawson sits in 2nd place in the standings with the upcoming double Suzuka-header finale in October.
